The Brazilian Federal Public Defender's Office works to uphold the rights of the most vulnerable among all the people who live in the country, Brazilians and foreigners, particularly the indigenous and other traditional peoples, those affected by structural racism, homophobia and other kinds of discrimination, including gender inequality, and anyone who can't afford to hire a privet lawyer.
Its Branch for Civil Litigation before the Superior Courts gather eleven Senior Public Defenders who conducts a broad range of cases dealing with constitutional, tax, contracts, torts, commercial, family, juvenile, environmental, immigration and international judicial cooperation in civil matters, retirement and pensions, social security funding, human and civil rights and civil procedure law, Both as amicus curiae and representing the plaintiff or the defendant, the Branch for Civil Litigation takes part in standardizing the interpretation of federal law.
The Head of Branch leads the Seniors Public Defenders who take part in it towards a proper and most effective litigation before the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice. Among their duties, the Head of Branch should promote debates and publish legal reports. There are two main publications (only in portuguese): Boletim do Cível and Série Análises em Andamento.
